When you need a legal heir certificate
- Mutation (namantaran) of the deceased’s property into the heirs’ names
- Claiming family pension, gratuity, provident fund or insurance
- Transferring electricity, water or telephone connections

When you need a succession certificate
- Releasing the deceased’s bank fixed deposits, savings or securities
